Rhode Island Philharmonic to perform at URI
KINGSTON, R.I. -- February 27, 2003 -- The Rhode Island Philharmonic will perform a Classical Series concert at the University of Rhode Islands Fine Arts Center on Sunday, March 2 at 3 p.m. Music Director Larry Rachleff will conduct and renowned violinist Cho-Liang Lin will join the orchestra in a performance of the Barber Violin Concerto.
The musical program includes Sibeliuss Romance in C major, Opus 42; and Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Opus 93 by Shostakovich.
Featured solo artist Cho-Liang Lin is known for the beauty of his sound, his technique and superb musical interpretation, according to the Rhode Island Philharmonic. Every season he appears with major orchestras and on foremost recital and chamber music series. Lin, honored as Musical Americas Instrumentalist of the Year in 2000, began his first season as artistic director of the SummerFest in La Jolla, California in August 2001.
Lin, winner of the Queen Sophia International Violin Competition at age 17, has won Gramaphone awards and Grammy nominations, as well as Stereo Reviews "Record of the Year." He is currently a faculty member at Juilliard.
Tickets for the concert can be purchased at the URI Music Office located at 105 Upper College Road in the URI Fine Arts Center or by calling 874-5955 or 874-2431 to order via credit card. Tickets will also be sold at the box office one-hour before the concert. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for students. A snow date is scheduled for Monday March 3 at 8 p.m. Sponsors for the concert include the URI Alumni Association and the College of Arts and Sciences. The URI Arts and Culture Fees also help fund the concert.
