URI junior helps to clean up Brushneck Cove

KINSTON, R.I.-- October 23, 1998 -- Gary Blazejewski of Cumberland, R.I., is helping to improve the drainage systems that lead into Brushneck Cove in Warwick through a research project at the University of Rhode Island.

"The Southern Rhode Island Conservation District has been commissioned to let the city of Warwick know which storm drain systems can most easily be retrofitted for the greatest benefit to Brushneck Cove," says Blazejewski, a junior Environmental Management major. Assisting in the evaluation of these systems, which ultimately drain into Greenwich Bay, he will then help to rank them in terms of their cleansing ability.

Blazejewski is involved in this project as a fellow for URI's Partnership for the Coastal Environment, an eight-month program that incorporates students into the research and outreach work of the professors and research staff of the university. He is working with Kris Stewart from the Southern Rhode Island Conservation District.

The URI Coastal Fellowship Program combines a structured, prestigious undergraduate experience with the resources and talents of the public and private sectors. While gaining the skills as well as the contacts that will ensure their success, students build the confidence needed to perform on the job before they enter the job market. Fellows also received a stipend for their work over the summer.

"It's been good to meet people with whom I share common interests and goals," says Blazejewski, "and I've gained hands-on experience for an issue with which I could possibly be dealing in the future."
