Members of URI's Feinstein-CCE win awards
KINGSTON, R.I.-- November 25, 1998 -- The following members of URI's
Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education in Providence were
honored at the University Continuing Education Association Region 1 meeting
held recently in North Conway, N.H.:
Dr. Gregory Paquette of Middletown was presented the Outstanding
Continuing Education Faculty Award for strong commitment to adult students
and community-based service learning. Paquette led in the development of
a master's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science that has been successful
from its inception nine years ago. He has fostered strong partnerships with
area hospitals, labs, and blood centers, causing these sites to be used
extensively by students and area health professionals to teach and provide
mentoring in the program. This past year, he was successful in convincing
area hospitals to create a cytotechnology track in the program and to establish
a state-of-the-art cytopathology lab on URI's Providence Campus at the hospitals'
expense.
· Virginia Nardone of South Kingstown, director of Special
Programs, Graduate Professional Center and Testing Services, was elected
regional-chair elect of the Continuing Education Association Region 1. In
this capacity, Nardone will chair the 1999 regional conference.
· Laurie Kiely of Barrington, a peer counselor in the Office
of Student Services, was presented with the Outstanding Continuing Education
Student Award. Kiely provides support and advocacy to other students and
coordinates many of the department's special events. An excellent writer,
Kiely is updating the Student Handbook. She has worked closely with the
co-director of the College's Human
Sexuality Program, planning and participating in organizational meetings
with Rhode Island sexuality educators and administrators, coordinating seminars
and special events, and attending meetings related to adolescent sexuality
sponsored by the Rhode Island Department of Health. At the same time, Kiely
maintains a high grade point average with membership in Alpha Sigma Lambda
Honor Society and the Golden Key National Honor Society while juggling the
demands of her roles as wife, mother, and student worker.
