Fran Cohen named dean of students at URI
KINGSTON, R.I. -- April 6, 1999 -- Fran Cohen, director of the Office
of Student Life at the University of Rhode Island, has been named dean of
students by URI President Robert L. Carothers. The job title change was
approved by the Rhode Island Board of Governors and is effective immediately.
"This change more accurately reflects the role which Fran plays
in campus life, says President Carothers. "Fran has been an outstanding
advocate for students, while she has also been an important leader in our
efforts to make this the culture for learning to which we aspire.
Cohen has played a key role in many of URI,s major initiatives, including
issues such as diversity and health promotion. For instance, Cohen is a
member of the University,s Alcohol Team, an interdisciplinary effort to
link campus-based research with prevention and outreach efforts. She has
been the driving force behind this and many other substance abuse initiatives
on campus.
"I look forward to continued to this new phase in my career at URI,
says Cohen. "It is truly a pleasure to work with the students here.
Cohen first joined the URI staff in 1971. As dean of students, she is
responsible for community standards, student discipline, substance abuse
services, disability services, international students and scholars, the
women,s and family weekend. She manages 11 professional staff, seven graduate
assistants, and 150 student employees.
Cohen is a member of the University Forum and chairs a number of committees
at URI, including the Social Regulations Committee and the Safe September
Committee. She serves on numerous other committees.
A resident of Ashaway, Cohen holds a B.A. in anthropology and an M.A.
in adult education, certificate in gerontology from URI.
