Clothing Drive at URI supports the Jonnycake
Center
KINGSTON, R.I. -- May 5, 1999 -- The end of the academic year means many
things to URI students. The studying for finals begins, the drive for the
perfect summer job starts, and plans to exit the campus commence. Also a
part of the end-of-the-year tradition at URI is the annual Johnnycake Center
Clothing and Food Drive on campus.
For the last few years, members of URI,s Union 528, students living in
the residence halls, the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling, and Residential
Life hall directors have worked together in a community project to provide
food and clothing to the Jonnycake Center. Students throughout the campus
residential halls sort through their food items, clothing, and small household
goods for donations to the center that provides support for families in
need.
The campaign this year, being supported by volunteers from the Clearinghouse
for Volunteers in the Feinstein Center for Service Learning, will run through
May 14.
The Jonnycake Center, located in Peace Dale, Rhode Island, is a non-profit
organization of South County residents whose mission is to help their neighbors
in the event of an emergency. The Center accomplishes this through an emergency
food program, a thrift shop open to the public, a furniture bank, and an
educational program that teaches self-support. The Feinstein Center for
Service Learning at the University of Rhode Island was created in 1995 from
a generous endowment given by Alan Shawn Feinstein.
The Feinstein Center for Service Learning houses several successful programs
including the Clearinghouse for Volunteers and RI Reads. The Clearinghouse
for Volunteers serves as a primary source for volunteer opportunities for
individual students, residence halls, student organizations, listing of
over one hundred local non-profit agencies. Information on volunteer opportunities
is available on our web site (http://www.uri.edu/volunteer) as well as in
binders located in the Resource Room, Taft Hall.
