Past president of American Society of Mechanical Engineers to speak at URI on Nov. 2

KINGSTON, R.I. -- October 25, 1999 -- Professor Arthur E. Bergles, past president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), will speak at the University of Rhode Island on Tuesday, Nov. 2. The lecture on "Enhanced Heat Transfer: The Final Frontier is sponsored by the Honors Program & Visiting Scholars Committee and will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. in Wales Hall, Room 226.

Bergles, a Clark and Crossan professor emeritus of engineering at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute and Glenn L. Martin Institute professor of engineering, University of Maryland, is an outstanding researcher in the area of heat transfer. He has an international reputation in this area of research. He has published more than 340 technical papers, 23 books and more than 100 technical reports, and has presented 313 invited lectures in the U.S. and foreign countries. He has served as chairman of several committees, of the Heat Transfer Division/American Society of Mechanical Engineers International, as an editor of the Journal of Heat Transfer, and as chairman of the division. He was ASME president for professional development and a two-term governor of the society. Among other recognitions, Bergles received from the American Association for the Advancement of Science: Fellow (1998); AIChE; Donald Q. Kern Award (1990); American Society for Engineering Education: Fellow (1998) and many others.

The URI Department of Mechanical Engineering will serve as host for his visit to Rhode Island.
