URI offers a Piano Extravaganza weekend
KINGSTON, R.I. -- February 13, 2004 -- The University of Rhode Island's Department of Music will host a weekend of piano -related events Friday, Feb. 20 through Sunday, Feb. 22. URI's Piano Extravaganza, coordinated by Manabu Takasawa, assistant professor of music, also offers a competition for pre-college piano students. All events will take place in URI's Fine Arts Center, Kingston Campus.
Festival highlights include a workshop for piano teachers by the principal piano technician for Telarc Records and New York-based pianist Hiroshi Taguchi who will join URI piano faculty and students for the Saturday evening concert. The extravaganza is funded by a URI Outreach Grant. The extravaganza’s competition is sponsored, in part, by URI's Great Performances. For detailed information and ticket sales call, 401-874-2790. Friday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m.
A workshop for piano teachers on the construction and care of pianos. Barbara Renner will speak from her experience as the principal piano technician for Telarc Records. Renner will also discuss issues related to the instrument, including how to select the right instrument for a student. (Call 401-874-2790, free and open to the public.)
Saturday, Feb. 21, 8 p.m.
University Artist Series: "A Piano Extravaganza!" Hiroshi Taguchi, a New York-based pianist joins the URI piano faculty, staff and students. An evening of two-hand, four-hand and eight-hand piano music from classical and jazz selections. (Call 401-874-2790; tickets $8 general and $2 students.)
Sunday, Feb. 22, 1 p.m.
Festival Piano Competition. Pre-college pianists will perform for judges. Awards will be given. (Call 401-874-2790, free and open to the public.)
