KINGSTON, R.I. -- April 7, 2004 -- While the University of Rhode Island's Kingston Campus is thousands of miles from Paris, and even hundreds from New York, this month it will be the hotbed for spring fashion.
First, on Thursday, April 22, the University's student-run Fashion Merchandising Society will present "Fire and Ice," a show of new designs by students. One week later, on Thursday, April 29, the Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design (TMD) department will present a "Spring Splash" in celebration of its students' works and the accomplishments of many of its alumni and industry partners.
Both of the events will showcase the new fashion works by students.
Students feature Fire and Ice: On April 22 at 7 p.m., students in the University's Fashion Merchandising Society will share their flair for fashion with the show "Fire and Ice," at the Memorial Union Ballroom. Tickets for the show are $7 per person and are available at the door. The Society is a student-run group that organizes a show of student designers each year. Participating students design and construct their own clothing lines based solely on their own inspiration.
The Spring Splash: On April 29 at 6 p.m., the department and its advisory board will welcome alumni and friends to a very stylish event featuring a mix of fashion, awards, and alumni recognition.
"Each year our student fashion show has garnered a great deal of attention of far more than just the campus community," said TMD Department Chair and Professor Martin Bide. "This year, we're 'kicking it up a notch' because the work of our students clearly draws focus to the creative energies of these emerging professionals. It also gives us an opportunity to recognize the leadership of our alumni in the field and to thank a few of the many companies in the industry for their support."
The evening will begin with an elegant reception at the University Club, and be followed by a formal dinner featuring a runway show of the year's select student designs, the inauguration of the department's "Wall of Fame" in recognition of the achievements of three alumni and New England industry leaders in the textiles, fashion and marketing fields, and the announcement of the fashion industry "Person of the Year."
The Fashion Show, called "Hip Hop Haute," features the best of the studentsí "Fire and Ice" show designs, judged by a panel of industry experts. Design awards of $500, $300 and $200 will be awarded to three students that evening.
Tickets for this event are $100 per person. All proceeds will help to support and improve TMD student education, and be used for such things as guest speakers, field trips, and scholarship support. For tickets and more information, please call 874-4574.
URIís TMD program has almost 400 undergraduate majors who will be the designers, buyers, merchandisers and scientists for the textile and fashion industry of the future.
