Awards to be presented to students, alumni and fashion 'person of the year'

KINGSTON, R.I. -- April 27, 2004 -- The University of Rhode Island's Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design (TMD) department will present its first "Spring Splash" on Thursday, April 29 at 6 p.m. The event will celebrate the accomplishments of many of its alumni and industry partners and showcases select fashions created by the URI Fashion Merchandising Society students.

The evening will begin with an elegant reception at the University Club and be followed by a formal dinner at the Memorial Union Ballroom featuring a runway show of the year's select student designs, the inauguration of the department's "Wall of Fame" in recognition of the achievements of three alumni and New England industry leaders in the textiles, fashion and marketing fields, and the announcement of the fashion industry "Person of the Year."

"Each year our student fashion show has garnered a great deal of attention of far more than just the campus community," said TMD Department Chair and Professor Martin Bide. "This year, we're 'kicking it up a notch' because the work of our students clearly draws focus to the creative energies of these emerging professionals. It also gives us an opportunity to recognize the leadership of our alumni in the field and to thank a few of the many companies in the industry for their support."

The fashion show, called "Hip Hop Haute," features the best of the studentsí "Fire and Ice" show designs, as judged by a panel of industry experts last week. Design awards of $500, $300 and $200 will be presented to three students during the Spring Splash affair.

Tickets for this event are $100 per person. All proceeds will help to support and improve TMD student education, and be used for such things as guest speakers, field trips, and scholarship support. For tickets and more information, please call 874-4574.
