URI music prep program will lead children in pulling a few strings this summer

KINGSTON, R.I. -- June 14, 2004 -- Next month, the University of Rhode Island Preparatory Music Program will hold its second annual "Summer String Week" for students who play classical stringed instruments.

The program will be held July 5-9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily and is open to students who play violin, viola, cello and bass who will be entering grades 3 through 9 in the fall. The cost for the program is $225 per child.

Under the direction of Daniela Gongora, with assistants Meg Winters and Katie Papini, the program will include large ensemble rehearsals, chamber music, and sessions in music theory and string techniques.

The students' work will culminate in a performance for family and friends on Friday, July 9th at noon.
