URI Theatre announces September auditions for upcoming productions

KINGSTON, R.I -- August 12, 2004 -- Ever had a hankering for the stage? This could be your opportunity. URI Theatre will hold auditions which are open to the public for its upcoming productions of The Grapes of Wrath, Disney’s Beauty & the Beast and Les Liaisons Dangereuses. The auditions will be held in September at the University of Rhode Island’s Theatre Department, Fine Arts Center, Kingston campus. Please contact the URI Theatre Department, 874-5921 to reserve an audition time.

Auditions for The Grapes of Wrath will be held Wednesday, Sept. 8 and Thursday, Sept. 9 from 6 to 11 p.m. in G Studio. Callbacks will be held Friday, Sept. 10 from 6 to 11 p.m., Will Theatre. Prior to auditioning, actors should read the play, an adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel by Frank Galati, Dramatist Play Service (1991.) In addition, actors should come prepared with a 1-to-2 minute memorized, contemporary (1920-2004) prose monologue. The monologue should tell a story conveying feelings of trouble and/or fear or frustration or hope, etc. Simplicity is the key to choice of monologue and its execution. Rehearsals will begin in September.

Auditions for Les Liaisons Dangereuses will be held Wednesday, Sept. 8 and Thursday, Sept. 9 from 6 to 10 p.m. in J Studio. Callbacks will be held Friday, Sept. 10 from 6 to 10 p.m., J Studio. Actors should read the play prior to auditioning and prepare a 1-to-2 minute contemporary (1920-2004) prose monologue. Actors can use the same monologue required for The Grapes of Wrath audition. Rehearsals will begin in January 2005.

Disney’s Beauty & the Beast auditions will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, from noon to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 19 from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. G Studio. Callbacks are scheduled for Monday, Sept. 20 from 7 to 11 p.m., G Studio. Anyone auditioning should prepare and memorize two contrasting songs from the musical theater field and bring the sheet music to the audition.

Although music from Beauty & the Beast may not be used, other Disney selections will be acceptable. A pianist will be provided. Bring appropriate shoes and be prepared to perform a brief dance routine in a small group. Additional singing, dancing and acting will be required of all at callbacks. Rehearsals will begin mid-October.
