URI Bay Campus to Host JASON Expedition 2005: Disappearing Wetlands

Live broadcasts from the Louisiana Bayou to the URI Bay Campus, Jan. 31-Feb. 5

Narragansett, RI -- January 21, 2005 -- JASON Expedition: Disappearing Wetlands will engage students and teachers in an exciting journey to explore the unique and diverse bayous of Louisiana. This JASON Expedition will focus on understanding what wetlands are, why they are disappearing, and how to best manage these ecosystems in your neighborhood and around the world.

As Dr. Robert Ballard and his team of scientists and Teacher and Student Argonauts explore the wetland ecosystems that provide habitat for an incredible diversity of plants and animals, every student in Rhode Island will have the opportunity to view the expedition either live at the URI Bay Campus, or over Cox cable Channel 15 (Interconnect “C”). The students at schools that have high-speed Internet connections (I2) have the benefit of viewing and being able to interact with the URI host during live broadcasts.

The JASON Expedition broadcasts will take place from January 31-February 5. The general public, is invited to view the live, interactive JASON broadcasts at the Bay Campus Coastal Institute Visitor Center Auditorium Monday through Friday, January 31-February 4, at 12:45, 2:15 and 3:45 p.m. On Saturday, February 5, live broadcasts are at 9:45 and 11:15 a.m. and 12:45, 2:15, and 3:45 p.m. The 9:45 and 11:15 shows during the week are reserved for school groups. Tickets are $3 per person. Reservations are required and will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The live broadcasts of the JASON Expedition Disappearing Wetlands will be carried on Cox Cable Channel 15 (Interconnect “C”) at 10 am Monday through Saturday, and on Saturday at 11:30 am, 1:00 and 2:30 pm.


JASON Expedition: Disappearing Wetlands will be led by JASON Project founder and URI Graduate School of Oceanography faculty member Dr. Robert Ballard. More information about the 2005 JASON Expedition can be found at www.jasonproject.org.

The Rhode Island JASON Expedition is coordinated by the URI Office of Marine Programs. Sponsors for the JASON Expedition in Rhode Island include the University of Rhode Island’s Office of Marine Programs and Graduate School of Oceanography, the Rhode Island Office of Higher Education, the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, OSHEAN, RINET, and Cox Communications.
