KINGSTON, R.I. -- February 24, 2005 -- Visitors to the University of Rhode Island Library on the Kingston Campus will find the gallery walls awash in award-winning watercolors by local artist and alumnus Carole Berren.

The gallery exhibition, "From Here to Modernity," runs through March 4, 2005. Free and open to the public, the library gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to Midnight; Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday 1 p.m. to Midnight.

A 1964 URI graduate, Berren has been painting and teaching drawing and watercolor to adults for more than 20 years. One of the pieces at the Library gallery is a print of a painting that was recently accepted into the American Watercolor Society's annual exhibition in New York City. The original painting will be on exhibit in N.Y. during the month of April.

This is the first time she has exhibited at URI and Berren says it feels great to bring her works to her alma mater.

"I majored in education and English, and minored in psychology and I've found that this background has contributed tremendously to my work as a painter. It has helped me to learn and to teach people to have confidence in what they're doing to help them achieve," said Berren who proudly adds that the results of these teaching efforts, her students' works, will be exhibited at the Cranston Public Library in April.

Berren teaches private studio sessions and offers classes, demonstrations and workshops through various art associations in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

In addition to her acceptance into this yearís American Watercolor Societyís juried international exhibition, Berren has received numerous awards and recognition for her work. Her work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and is included in many private, public and corporate collections worldwide. Her work also appeared at the 2000 Rocky Mountain Watercolor Societyís national juried watermedia exhibit in Colorado.

Berren is an elected artist member with the Newport Art Association, North Shore Art Association (MA), Providence Art Club, Rhode Island Watercolor Society, South County Art Association and Wickford Art Association.
