KINGSTON, R.I. -- September 29, 2005 -- The University of Rhode Island will host its largest engineering and technology job fair in recent memory on Oct. 12, with more than 35 companies participating. The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Memorial Union ballroom on URI’s Kingston campus, is free and open to the public.

“A national survey of the job outlook for the 2005-2006 hiring year found that employers planned to increase their hiring by 14.5 percent over last year,” said Bobbi Koppel, URI director of Career Services. “Engineers are critical in every industry – environmental and marine industries, defense, information technology, manufacturing, transportation, business services, health care, finance, telecommunications, consumer products.

“Not only in the Gulf area recently hit by hurricanes, but nationwide, engineers are at work planning and managing the buildings, highways, equipment and resources of today and the future. Companies helping to rebuild in areas affected by the hurricanes will likely be hiring a large number of engineers in the near future.”

Among the companies participating in the engineering and technology job fair are Texas Instruments, Toray Plastics, Raytheon, Pratt & Whitney, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, General Dynamics, American Power Conversion, DiPrete Engineering, SAIC, Siemens, and A.T. Cross.

“Thanks to the efforts of the Career Services staff, we’ve achieved tremendous success in increasing the number of companies who come to URI to recruit to fill engineering and technology jobs,” said Bahram Nassersharif, dean of URI’s College of Engineering. “Obviously there are many engineering jobs available, and these companies value the engineering education that students receive at URI.”

“Most of these companies don’t just send one person to our job fairs, they send two or three or more,” Koppel said. “They’re making a significant investment in these events to come and recruit because they definitely will be hiring soon.”
