NARRAGANSETT, R.I. -- February 9, 2006 -- The Rhode Island Endeavor Program, managed by the URI Graduate School of Oceanography, has issued a request for proposals for projects affiliated with the research vessel Endeavor, a 185-foot, general-purpose oceanographic research ship home-ported in Narragansett, R.I.

For more information about the R/V Endeavor visit http://techserv.gso.uri.edu/.

The Endeavor Program provides Rhode Islanders with direct access to the scientific, research and educational capabilities of an intermediate class research vessel and serves as a vital expression of Rhode Islandís support for marine operations at URIís Graduate School of Oceanography.

The Endeavor Program emphasizes scientific marine research, education, and technical training. The program encourages activities that enhance or promote strategic partnerships between academia, private sector businesses and federal labs in developing new technologies for research and industrial applications. State funds ($500,000 per year) will be used to provide sea time on the Endeavor in order to conduct scientific experiments, test equipment and techniques, and to educate students.

The proposal deadline is March 24, 2006, and approval of proposals for the 2007 fiscal year (beginning on July 1, 2006) is contingent on anticipated funding from the State of Rhode Island. Proposal guidelines are available on-line at: http://www.gso.uri.edu/riep/index.html.
A one-hour conference for prospective proponents will be held Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. in the Challenger Room of the Pell Marine Science Library on the URI Narragansett Bay Campus. Anyone interested in submitting a proposal is welcome to participate.

Proposals should contain a research, educational, and/or development component; present an operation plan that is consistent with U.S. Coast Guard and University National Oceanographic Laboratory System rules and regulations; and accept that previously scheduled research cruises take priority over Endeavor Program activities.
