URI Providence Campus to host open house for biotechnology manufacturing program

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – February 7, 2007 – Students interested in learning more about the growing field of biotechnology and the University of Rhode Island’s biotechnology manufacturing program are invited to attend an open house on Feb. 22 or Mar.15 at 6 p.m.

The sessions will be held in room 302 at the URI Feinstein Providence Campus, 80 Washington Street, Providence.

Initiated in 2003, the biotechnology manufacturing program features a rigorous curriculum that prepares students to work in the growing field of biotechnology and leads to a bachelor of science degree. Classes are held in Providence and begin with two semesters of full-time study followed by a summer internship at a biotechnology company in the area. Coursework includes biology, chemistry, biotechnology methods, computer science and math.

Following the internship, most students go to work full-time in the industry at starting salaries of $35,000-$40,000 and complete their education as part-time students.

“This degree program has attracted students over a wide range of age and educational backgrounds who are eager to train for a new career,” said Greg Paquette, URI’s director of biotechnology programs. “Some have been laid off from other positions, while others are working in jobs where there is little opportunity for advancement. Still others are going back to college after raising children or leaving the military. All agree that this is a practical way to turn a long-term interest in biology, medicine or technology into a challenging and economically-viable career.”
