URI to celebrate 80th anniversary of Memorial Gateway

WHO: URI President Robert L. Carothers, Vice President Robert A. Weygand, Alumni Association President Gary Kullberg, URI ROTC Leadership Capt. Jim Poland, and the Rev. John Soares of the URI Catholic Center, faculty, staff and students.
WHAT: The 80th anniversary of the dedication of the Memorial Gateway. On June 16, 1928, alumni and students presented the gateway, two stone arches on Upper College Road, to Rhode Island State College, now URI. The 1929 college bulletin, noted the gateway “is intended as a memorial to the heroic dead from among us, who gave up their lives in the Great War, and guards the entrance to the memorial grove which surrounds the boulder monument that bears the names of the dead. President Carothers will read from the new plaque that replaces earlier versions, which states: “Presented by the Alumni and Students of Rhode Island State College as a token of their loyalty to their alma mater. Dedicated June 16, 1928 and Re-Dedicated June 16, 2008.”
