Kingston, RI, Feb. 29, 2012 – Because of the threat of bad weather Thursday, March 1, the University of Rhode Island Student Alumni Association has rescheduled its Nearly Naked Mile race and clothing drive to Thursday, March 8 at 7 p.m.

If unforeseen circumstances again prevent the running of the event next week, community members can still make clothing donations Thursday, March 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday, March 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at booth two in the main lobby of the Memorial Union.

The event will call attention to clothing needs of the poor. Students will arrive at the URI Quadrangle, take off and donate one coat or two articles of clothing, and then proceed to run a mile in appropriate attire.

The student association is working with the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale and the Welcome House of South County to organize the clothing donation. The student group is anticipating that hundreds of pounds of clothing will be collected and donated by the end of the evening. There will be plenty of fun at the event, including music by a disc jockey, activities, prizes and plenty of Rhody Pride.

Students are encouraged to register online before March 8 at www.urisaa.org. The number of runners is limited, but spectators can still donate clothing during the event. For additional information, you can go to the website or call 508-965-0456.

“SAA has been planning the Nearly Naked Mile for almost two years, and we are excited to make it a URI campus tradition,” said Tim Viall, campus and community relations chair for the student association. “The purpose of the run is to give URI students the experience of being outside with minimal clothing, a problem that hundreds of people across Rhode Island face every day. The Nearly Naked Mile provides students with a fun and unique way to donate clothing to local non-profits.”

The race is limited to 600 URI students, but all spectators and other donations are welcome, Viall said.

“We hope to get as much of the URI community involved as possible,” Viall said. "SAA has always taken part in community service projects, but the Nearly Naked Mile is great because it allows a lot of people to get involved and it's an easy way to donate clothes."

Nearly Naked Mile Schedule March 8, 2012:

6:30 - 7:00 p.m. - Opening ceremony, warm up exercises
