WEST GREENWICH, R.I. – April 30, 2012 -- The University of Rhode Island’s W. Alton Jones Campus will host two open house events this spring for families interested in the Alton Jones summer camps for children. The events, part of the campus’ 50th anniversary celebration, will be held on Saturday, May 12 and Saturday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“These are fun events that give parents and children an opportunity to speak with our camp staff, tour the property and our facilities, and learn about the wide range of camps we offer,” said John Jacques, director of the camps. “Refreshments will be available, and parents can register their children on the spot if they choose to.”
The W. Alton Jones Campus is a 2300-acre former estate with a 75-acre private lake and 10 miles of hiking trails.
Day campers can explore life on a farm at the Woodvale Farm Day Camp for ages 5-8, the ecology of forests, ponds and streams at the Eco-Zone Day Camp for ages 8-11, or high adventure activities such as rock climbing at the Teen X Day Camp for ages 12-15. Overnight Earth Campers ages 9-13 can choose from a variety of adventures that include exploring marine-life, stream hiking, backpacking, tree climbing, a swamp tromp, and staying up to experience the nocturnal world. The Teen Expeditions program for ages 12-17 focuses on multi-sport adventure activities such as surfing, sailing, rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, and rafting.
