Interdisciplinary Minor
Why Minor in Nonviolence and Peace Studies?
Are you interested in issues of social justice?
Do you care about Human Rights?
Are you tired of hearing about violence in schools?
Do you wonder why violence is a common response to social and international conflicts?
Would you like to join a team of nonviolence trainers from URI and visit a foreign country as part of an international nonviolence education project?
Then an Interdisciplinary Minor in Nonviolence & Peace Studies is the program for you! Students at URI may declare a Minor in Nonviolence and Peace Studies by filling out the one-page Declaration of Minor and completing a minimum of 18 credits of course related to nonviolence & peace studies. This form is available from your academic Dean's office.
Foundations
- Colloquium in Nonviolence and Peace Studies. This new one-credit Spring semester course will give an overview of work in this field, with emphasis on work by members of the URI community, and provide a common experience for students in the Minor. (one credit)
- Nonviolence Training and Follow-Up Study.
(a) Complete a nonviolence training experience such as one of the two-day workshops offered by URI's Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies (or a training offered by the American Friends Service Committee, Fellowship of Reconciliation, or similar organization).
(b) Then sign up for three credits of directed reading/independent study focused on the history, theory, and application of nonviolence. Credits may be earned in HDF 498, HIS 391, HPR 401 or 402, PHL 499, PSC 455 or 456, PSY 489, SOC 498 or 499, and should be chosen in consultation with the advisor for the Minor and other faculty. (three credits)
Levels of Application
- Study of Individual/Interpersonal Peace Processes. Take one or more of the following courses: COM 221, 422; HDF 450; HPR 107, 110; PSY 479Y, 479H; or SOC 408. (three or more credits)
- Study of Societal/Global Peace Processes. Take one or more of the following courses: AAF/PSC 380; COM
310, 361; ECN 386; HPR 411; PHL 217; SOC 318; or PSC 420. (three or more credits)
Further Study
- Additional Related Courses. Students may complete their 18 credits by taking additional courses from the Individual/Interpersonal and Societal/Global lists. Students may also take courses related to Nonviolence and Peace Studies, such as AAF/SOC 240, 336; AAF/HIS 359, 366; AAF/SOC 428; COM 310, 322, 421, 461; ECN 381; HDF 230, 434; HIS 328, 349; PSC 485; PSY 103, 334, 335; PSY/SOC 430; SOC 216, 230, 274, 330, 331, 370, 413, 420, 452; WMS 150, 310, 350, and 351. Consult with the advisor for the Minor on course selections. (optional, up to nine credits)
Students are responsible for meeting applicable prerequisites for courses in the minor, or for obtaining the instructor's permission to take a course. Sponsoring departments and programs: Communication Studies, Honors Program, Human Development & Family Studies, Philosophy, Psychology, Women's Studies.
