Professor Hecker is a graduate of the Master of Science Program of the University of Rhode Island. Her specialty is parent/child health with clinical expertise in the care of infants, children, and families. Ms. Hecker has also worked in community health and pediatric home care nursing. Her research interests include exploration and description of the process of transition in the practice domain as well as the client domain.

She enjoys advocating for and assisting students in the transition from nursing education to nursing practice.

At the College of Nursing, Professor Hecker teaches a variety of courses including leadership and community health, but considers nursing of children her first priority. Currently, she is completing her doctorate and is developing scholarly inquiry into several interesting topics:

  • Transition as a concept: a process and a theory
  • Power and control in the practice of nursing
  • Cue conveyance (communication between the non-verbal, cognitively impaired and their caretakers)

Community Partnerships

Community partnerships are agencies that serve as clinical sites for student learning. The College of Nursing has excellent placements available throughout the state of Rhode Island and the bordering states. For some perspective of the diversity of our partnerships and the scope of experiences available for our students at all levels, see our information on Community Partnerships.
