Professor Gerzevitz received her masters degree from the College of Nursing at URI in 1987. She is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She has been practicing as a Nurse Practitioner with a focus in the clinical area of adult internal medicine. She has had experience in the role of nurse practitioner in the in-patient setting.
Professor Gerzevitz has a deep commitment to working with the poor in the inner-city and in developing nations. In 1991, she opened a small church-based clinic in South Providence R.I. There she incorporated her expertise as a nurse practitioner with her spiritual beliefs, providing health and illness care to the disenfranchised people in the inner-city. She continues to be active in the inner city as a volunteer clinician for the Rhode Island Free Clinic. Each summer, Professor Gerzevitz has taken graduate students with her on a medical missions trip to Honduras where students learn to provide primary care to families in a unique culturally diverse environment. Students are enriched in many ways by these experiences. Her interest in other cultures has taken her to Ethiopia to work with missionaries and to learn about the culture and the challenges that face the Ethiopians in disease prevention and health promotion. Professor Gerzevitz is also committed to the country of Romania and serves on the Board of Directors for the Hospice of Hope, an organization dedicated to the provision of excellent palliative care services in Romania and the rest of the Balkan nations.
On campus in the college of nursing, Professor Gerzevitz is the lead faculty for the family nurse practitioner program. Her prime teaching responsibilities include advanced physical assessment, advanced pathophysiology and various lectures in the primary care curriculum.
