Dr. Ferszt, who joined the faculty at the College of Nursing in 1993, is a psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialist and a fellow in Thanatology. Dr. Ferszt's former positions include Hospice Coordinator and Counselor, Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Nurse, Psychotherapist in Private Practice, Consultant to Hospice Programs and Home Care Agencies, Faculty at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.

Dr. Ferszt coordinates the Graduate Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Program and is an active member of the Weyker Thanatology Institute at the University of Rhode Island. In addition to teaching the graduate courses in Advanced Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, she teaches Nursing Research at the BS and Qualitative Research Methods at the PhD level.

Dr. Ferszt's research trajectory reflects her commitment to Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and the field of Thanatology. Since 1998, her research has focused on the grief experiences of women in prison and interventions that address the specific mental health needs of this population. Currently her research is focusing on the heatlh care needs of pregnant and postpartum incarcerated women.

Dr. Ferszt's professional memberships include Sigma Theta Tau, American Nurses Association and Rhode Island Nurses Association, Eastern Nursing Research Society, American Correctional Health Services Association, the International Psychiatric Nurses Association, the International Association of Forensic Nurses and INTEGRA. In 2003 she received the research award from the International Society of Psychiatric Nurses for her work in correctional health, in 2005 the Academic Educator Award from the Rhode Island State Nurses Association, and in 2007 the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Rhode Island Department of Corrections.

Dr. Ferszt serves on the Community Advisory Board for Female Offenders . She has also been a consultant to the University of Skvoede, Sweden for the development of a Psychiatric Mental Health Graduate Program. In 2006, she was invited by the University of Buskerud in Norway and the University of Skvode to disucss her research with women in prsion. In 2007, Dr. Ferszt received Candidacy as a Fulbright Senior Specialist for the next five years.
