Professor Schwartz received her Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from URI in 1983 and received her Masters of Science in Nursing from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell in 1998. She is certified as a gerontological nurse practitioner through the ANCC and is also certified as a wound, ostomy and continence nurse through the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses' Society since 1992. Professor Schwartz is the lead faculty for the gerontological nurse practitioner program.
Prior research contributions include reminiscence therapy in the institutionalized older adult, exercise promotion, and survey response rates in older adults. Research interests include 'novice to expert' role reversal in graduate nursing students.
Professor Schwartz's GNP experience over the last 7 years include developing the gerontological nurse practitioner role in the northern central Massachusetts service area of Fallon Clinic, providing care in up to 11 nursing facilities and rehabilitation centers. Also, she precepted NP students during that time from University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, University of Massachusetts-Lowell, and Simmons College.
Other prior experience includes cardiac intensive care, wound care, ostomy teaching/care, case management, and outpatient GI clinical department management.
