Professor Carley is a graduate of Boston University, with a specialty in primary care nursing. She is certified as a nurse practitioner through the ANCC. She has been a faculty member in the Family Nurse Practitioner concentration for the past fourteen years and is the lead faculty for the adult curriculum. Areas of interest include women's health, health care for the homeless and underserved, and nurse practitioner education/practice.

Professor Carley has had a diverse clinical practice experience in the areas of adult and women's health care, occupational health, primary prevention/health promotion, and health care for the homeless. She has been involved with providing care for the homeless for over eighteen years. Initially volunteering on the Crossroads Rhode Island (previously Travelers Aid) Medical Van, which provides care to homeless shelter residents, and more recently at the primary care provider in the Women's Clinic at Crossroads Rhode Island, Professor Carley currently precepts students in the clinical area at Crossroads Rhode Island, and at the Rhode Island Free Clinic.
