Mary Lavin

Mary Lavin received her Master's Degree with a focus as a Clinical Specialist in medical-surgical nursing from Boston University in 1978. Ms. Lavin holds a post-master's certificate as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Rhode Island. She is board-certified by the ANCC and has been practicing as a Family Nurse Practitioner in primary care practice and is an affiliate member of the Practitioner Staff at Newport Hospital (a magnet hospital) in Newport, Rhode Island.
Mary Lavin has been responsible for teaching medical-surgical nursing content in the classroom and clinical setting for the baccalaureate program. She developed the Undergraduate Physical Assessment Course in collaboration with Mary Louise Palm during a curriculum revision.
As a member and chairperson of the Student Affairs Committee, Professor Lavin developed a mentor program for the undergraduate nursing students. She has been supportive of student issues and concerns and has been instrumental in implementing a College of Nursing peer tutoring program. Ms. Lavin is chair of the College of Nursing Health Committee, which has been charged with focusing activities of the College of Nursing to impact health care practices of the students within the College of Nursing and the University.
Professor Lavin was recently awarded a Faculty Fellowship from the Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center. Her focus includes the importance of spirituality and humor in the older adult. Other research interests include humor in nursing and death and dying.
