(5) The concept of a fundamental vision of a communications network of scholar's workstations is by no means novel; many institutions formulated a vision and plans for such academic networks in the 1980's. In fact, Brown University was one of the leaders in developing startegic plans and a vision for its community of scholars. The vision statements presented herein are based on the statements articulated by Brown University through publications and discussions with key professionals who are responsible for information technology planning.
