for the first time).

Mission
The University of Rhode Island recognizes that entering or returning to
college more than five years after high school is not just an event, but
is also a change process. The Office of Independent Student Services is
committed to helping independent students nagivate the many variables that
will effect their lives as they proceed through the transition, assimilation,
and adjustment to the university experience. The programs and services offered
are intended to address individual student concerns as well as to advocate
for the unique needs of this population within the university community.
Services and
Programs
Independent Student Orientation
The Office of Independent Student Services coordinates a special URI orientation
formatted specifically with the independent student in mind. Orientation
is a place where independent students can speak to an advisor, register
for classes, obtain a student ID and parking pass, learn about URI-Kingston
and its services, and meet other new independent students with similar personal
situations. This particular orientation fulfills the university's initiation
requirement, and no other orientation needs to be attended.
The independent student orientation is not only unique in its format but
also in its offerings. Your support system from home, be it a significant
other, family member of friend, is welcome to join you at this orientation,
and we strongly encourage this. It is nice for them to see where you will
be and recognize that they will be a strong influence on your success at
URI. We will also provide childcare for those who may require it. The orientation
is held on a Saturday in July and in December (for students coming to the
university for the spring semester).
Student Challenge Assistance
Independent students' needs and interests differ from the traditional
18- to 23-year-old student. They may be married, raising a family, changing
careers, or earning a living while attending school. These unique circumstances
occasionally create challenges for the indpendent student in regard to university
administration, office hours, faculty, policies and procedures, or even
personal relationships. OISS provides assistance to students dealing with
these challenges through private advising appointments and collaboration
with the university's Independent Student Support Network.
Emergency Locator Service
During the academic year, emergency situations may occur and the independent
student's family or children's schools may need to reach them while they
are on campus. An Emergency Locator Form is available at the Office of Student
Life. Once completed, these forms are kept on file to facilitate attempts
to locate the student during their time on campus.
We Are Expanding...
This office is in the process of expanding its programs and services to
the independent student population on the URI Kingston campus. We would
love input from the students we are attempting to serve. Please let us know
any of your ideas regarding ways we can be more effective.
