SUMMER SHORT COURSES


Aug. 5, 19, 26

Narragansett Indians - 1-1/2 hour class 1 time per week for 2 weeks covering the history and culture of the Narragansett Indians, including storytelling, drumming, singing, dancing and the native crafts and artistry of the tribe. A tour of the Pequot Museum will be on the last class (Aug. 26) from 1-4pm.

Presenters: Cassius Spears, Thawn Harris, Kevin McBride.

Wednesdays, 4:00pm - 5:30pm (No class Aug. 12)

$15 per member plus $11 per member museum charge.

Mythology Class - Exploring the Iliad, the epic Greek poem narrating the final year of the Trojan War. Learn about the gods and great heroes of the Greeks by listening to readings from the Iliad by Derek Jacobi. Instructed by Richard Tuoni.

Sept. 8, 15, 22 Exploring Marine Habitats of Point Judith Pond - Explore the 3 principal habitats of the neighboring Point Judith Pond - the rocky inter-tidal zone, the sandy beach, and the marshes. Each session will involve a field trip to different locations to explore the flora and fauna of each habitat. Instructed by Prentice Stout.

Tuesdays 1:00pm - 2:30pm

$15 per member plus copy costs.

Final Conversations: "Why We Should Speak with the Dying and How to Start" - Explore the common themes of final conversations: love, nonverbal expression, taking care of everyday business, spiritual messages and healing difficult relationships. Work on developing the confidence to say a good goodbye.

From Tin Pan Alley to Swing - Take an in depth look at how American music grew during the era of the 1920s - 1940s from “the Jazz Age” of the 1920s and into the 1930s where swing took American music by storm.

Literary Providence:  Walking with Lovecraft and Poe

Indulge your penchant for the macabre on this walking tour of Providence locales infused with the words and presence of H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe.  This tour focuses on the life and work of Lovecraft, Providence's best known fantasy and horror author, and the activities of the city's best remembered literary visitor, Poe.
