Special Topics in Women's

I: Native American Women. This course provides a broad
overview of indigenous women’s traditional roles and responsibilities
prior to colonization and the ways in which they continue to
participate in and help shape their respective cultures. Our
exploration will be both historical and contemporary, as to divorce
oneself from the past leaves one not to understand the present
experiences of indigenous people. We will examine the colonists’
negative and stereotypical views of Native women, examining such ideas
as the Pocahontas complex and other images that circulate and continue
to perpetuate negative images of indigenous women.
Course content includes:
• works of early Indian women who interrogate and
question the cultural construct of their identities as well as current
Native women such as Wilma Mankiller, the former tribal leader of the
of the Cherokee Nation, and Winoma LaDuke whose activism is known
world-wide
• video clips from films
• Film interviews of Bella Nola,
Narragansett; Pam Ellis, Nipmuc, Chief Sachem Mathew Thomas,
Narragansett Sachem, and others
• music/poetry clips of Joy Harjo, Native American
musician /poet/activist
Our objective in this class is to create an understanding of the ways
in which culture shapes women’s roles in their societies and the
transformation which occurs during cultural contact, whether its in the
early colonist period or modern day attitudes toward Native peoples. We
will attempt to explore such questions as what it is like to be a
Native American woman in the 21st century? Is it possible to be
tribal? How do Native women’s traditional roles align or conflict with
modern feminist ideas?
Selected areas of study pertinent
to women’s studies. Course description to come.

Writing Health
and
Disability (3 Units)
WRT 306 — Section 3000 —
Course
# 4486
Writing Health and Disability. Explores the ways we
experience, label, and politicize health and disability in our culture.
Writing may include narratives, cultural critiques, persuasive essays,
and policy proposals. This course explores the various ways we may
construct disability in writing: narratives of disability,
(memoir or medical narrative) cultural critiques, public awareness or
advocacy essays (persuasion), and policy proposals. It
also explores the discursive practices surrounding disability
in the culture. To facilitate our understanding of all of these areas,
we will read the following:
- Rhetorical views of disability in language and culture
- Views on disability rights in the workplace and other
spaces
- The narrative of a woman who grew up with a
disability in
America.
- A mother’s narrative of her young adult daughter’s
traumatic brain injury.
We will read (and perhaps argue
with) some
definitions of “disabled.” We will view three films: Mozart and
the Whale, My Left Foot, A Beautiful Mind and others of your own
choosing. In addition, we will read the ADA (Americans with
Disabilities Act) as a rhetorical statement, and discover together
“moments” in our daily lives where the ADA is eloquently applicable —
but is politely ignored. Finally, we will examine the centrality of
rhetoric to the creation of “other,” whether the intent behind the
creation of that “other” is positive or negative.
Texts:
- Embodied Rhetorics: Disability in Language and
Culture.
Wilson & Lewiecki-Wilson, eds.
- Disability Discourse: Disability, Human Rights,
and
Society. Corker & French, Eds.
- Homebound. Cass Irvin
- Being with Rachel. Karen Brennan
- Disabling Interpretations: The Americans with
Disabilities Act in Federal Court. Susan Gluck Mezey
- Writing Public Policy. Catherine F. Smith
- Recommended: An Anthropologist on Mars.
