Special Topics in Women's Stdy I*: Native American Women
(3 units)

Course # 13498 Section 0205 ONLINE Alexia Kosmider
Contact this instructor prior to start of the term: akosmo@etal.uri.edu

Special Topics in Women's Studies I: Native American Women. This course provides a broad overview of indigenous women's traditional roles and responsibilities prior to colonization and the ways in which they continue to participate in and help shape their respective cultures. Our exploration begins before colonization and the roles in which women played and their life experiences as the result of contact with European cultures, polices of removal, allotment, and disease. Our exploration will be both historical and contemporary, as to divorce oneself from the past leaves one not to understand the present experiences of indigenous people. We will examine the colonists' negative and stereotypical views of Native women, examining such ideas as the Pocahontas complex and other images that circulate and continue to perpetuate negative images of indigenous women. We will read the works of early Indian women who interrogate and question the cultural construct of their identities as well as current Native women such as Wilma Mankiller, the former tribal leader of the Cherokee Nation, and Winoma LaDuke whose activism is known world-wide. Our mapping of this vast territory will encompass a variety of sources including assigned weekly readings and literature written by Native women, video clips from films and interviews. Our objective in this class is to create an understanding of the ways in which culture shapes women's roles in their societies and the transformation which occurs during cultural contact, whether its in the early colonist period or modern day attitudes toward Native peoples. We will attempt to explore such questions as what it like to be a Native American woman in the 21st century? Is it possible to be tribal? How do Native women's traditional roles align or conflict with modern feminist ideas?

* May be repeated with different topic.

**Special Topics in Women's Studies I (3 units)

WMS 350 Section 0201 Course #10680

Special Topics in Women's Studies I: Women and Health. This course examines the ways in which health is a gendered phenomenon. Specifically, we will look at the political, economic, and cultural factors that impact women’s health. During the semester, we will also examine how class, race, and ableness intersect with gender to create unique barriers and challenges for women and their health.

Each week we will cover a specific topic related to the health of women. Some of these topics include, the medical encounter, barriers to healthcare, premenstrual syndrome and menopause, HIV risk and AIDS, genital surgery, sexuality, women with disabilities, and violence against women. The course will also pay close attention to developing increased understanding of women’s own bodies (e.g., menstrual health, sexually transmitted diseases, sexual assault, nutrition, pregnancy, health-promoting behaviors, cancer) as well as contemporary health issues (e.g., hormone replacement therapy, birth control). Assignments for the course will include weekly readings, discussion questions, and brief writing assignments, and one final paper on a topic related to women ’s health. By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Explain the social constructionist view of health as a gendered phenomenon
  • Identify genetic, social/environmental, cultural, psychological, and behavioral influences on women's health
  • Analyze and evaluate health-related materials and research from primary and secondary sources
  • Describe women’s development across the lifespan
  • Explain the impact of class, race, sexual identity, and ableness on women’s experiences of health
  • Explain the history of the women’s health movement
  • Describe models of health behavior change

This course will focus on a select group of 19th- and 20th-century Divas, in their own words and those of their biographers and critics, placing them in the context of the theater, music and literature of their times, and against the tumultuous politics and wars between post-Napoleonic Europe and present-day America. These figures, and texts, will be read against the concurrent struggles for women's equality and human rights. Subjects of the course will be Sarah Bernhardt, Isadora Duncan, Maria Callas, Eva Peron, Madonna, and Divine.
