Women and Health (3
units)
WMS 350 Section 0201 Course #2999
Special Topics in
Women's Studies: Women and Health. This course examines
the ways in which health is a gendered phenomenon. Specifically, we
will look at the political, economic, and cultural factors that impact
women’s health. During the semester, we will also examine how class,
race, and ableness intersect with gender to create unique barriers and
challenges for women and their health.
Each week we will cover a specific topic related to the health of
women. Some of these topics include, the medical encounter, barriers to
healthcare, premenstrual syndrome and menopause, HIV risk and AIDS,
genital surgery, sexuality, women with disabilities, and violence
against women. The course will also pay close attention to developing
increased understanding of women’s own bodies (e.g., menstrual health,
sexually transmitted diseases, sexual assault, nutrition, pregnancy,
health-promoting behaviors, cancer) as well as contemporary health
issues (e.g., hormone replacement therapy, birth control).
Assignments for the course will include weekly readings, discussion
questions, and brief writing assignments, and one final paper on a
topic related to women’s health.

Ecofeminism (3 units)
WMS 351 Section 0201 Course #5554
Special Topics in
Women's Studies: Ecofeminism. Ecofeminism is a practical
political movement addressing a broad range of urgent social and
political problems, from pollution, health, and species extinction to
economic development, militarism, racism, and sexual violence. Like all
environmentalists, ecofeminists are concerned with human relationships
to the natural world and intent on discovering relationships — among
human beings as well as between humans and non-human nature — that
contribute to a healing, or healthy, planet. Ecofeminists differ from
other environmentalists in their emphasis on the ways that "nature" has
been envisioned as female (or feminine), the parallel and mutually
reinforcing oppression of women and nature, and the ways that
environmental problems and issues specifically affect women.
Ecofeminists have various — and often conflicting — commitments to
liberal, cultural, socialist, indigenous, and postmodern feminist
theories. Instructor: Staff
