About Family Orientation
A university education is a family experience and your partnership with the URI community begins at Orientation. We encourage you to come to campus with your student and participate in a program designed specifically for you. You will meet faculty, staff, and students who are eager to welcome you and connect you with many resources on campus.
Additionally, we have developed an online program which you can access after Orientation to keep you "in the loop" with information and resources to help you help your student successfully transition to the University. More information about this program will be available when you attend Orientation.
For Families of First-Year Students
The program for Families of First-Year Students runs concurrently with the Student Orientation program. During the two-day program, you will learn about how academics are structured, meet with representatives from student support services, and be introduced to the deans and select faculty in order to sample the academic experience. After checking in, students and families will not meet again until checkout (4 p.m. on Day 2).
Additionally, you will receive materials that will assist you in getting to know the University and preparing for your student's new challenges and opportunities. You will also learn more about tools to help with the transition and emotions of "letting go." Last, but not least, you will have fun!
The cost for the program is $35 per family member and covers program materials, continental breakfast, 2 lunches, and a light reception.

For Families of Transfer Students
In a brief orientation program, family members of transfer students (24+ credits) will have a chance to meet with the dean of their student's academic college, attend a workshop on University services, and have lunch in a University Dining Facility. The cost is $10 per family member.
