Math Placement Exam

MATH PLACEMENT

TRANSFER STUDENTS:
There is not a need to complete math placement at this time.

FRESHMEN STUDENTS:
URI requires new freshmen students to complete the Math Placement Exam, regardless of intended major, through ALEKS to assess a student's prerequisite content knowledge. The results will support the academic advising staff to recommend courses placement.
ALEKS is a powerful artificial-intelligence based online assessment tool that zeros in on the strengths and weaknesses of a student's mathematical knowledge, reports its findings to the student, and provides the student with an online learning module (LM) that can be used to bring this knowledge up to an appropriate level for course placement or for review with the goal of being better prepared for their first math course at URI.

  • All incoming first-year students must complete the ALEKS placement exam at least 48 hours PRIOR to their scheduled Orientation session.
  • This assessment system is available to all incoming students -once you log-in, you must complete it.
  • Minimum recommended scores for course placement: Course descriptions and minimum scores are given here.
  • Online placement testing is done on the honor system. The scores are for placement purposes only and are not recorded on your official University academic record. Using your test results, you will work with your academic advisor during Orientation to choose the courses that are right for you.

What is the cost of the URI Math Placement Exam through ALEKS?
The placement exam for freshmen students is covered through your Orientation fees.

To start the exam:

  • Set aside a minimum 90 minutes of quiet, uninterrupted time. Although we recommend having 90 minutes to complete the exam, the exam is not timed. You can take longer to complete it, if needed.
  • You will not need a calculator.
  • Have your eCampus user ID on hand.
    • NOTE: Your eCampus User ID is the username that you use to log into your eCampus account.  IT IS NOT YOUR 9-DIGIT URI ID#
    • If you have not created an eCampus account yet, visit www.uri.edu/ecampus and click on "First Time Users Register Here".
    • ONCE YOU HAVE CREATED AN ECAMPUS ACCOUNT, please wait 24 hours before trying to access the math placement tool.

Click on the " Access the Placement System: I'm Ready" link below to start the placement exam.

After Completing the Initial Placement Assessment:

Learning ModulesOnce you complete the initial placement tool, you will see a color-coded pie chart that displays your results.  In the "pie", each slice corresponds to a particular content area (i.e. logarithms or exponents) and, the degree to which the slice is filled in with a darker color, shows the extent to which you have mastery of that content area.

If you wish to increase your skill level in a particular content area, and then retake the placement assessment, you can take advantage of the learning modules.  Simply click on the pie slice and you will be brought into the learning modules.

NOTE:

  • You have 6 months to start a the learning modules.  However, once you initiate the learning modules, you have 6 weeks of access to them.

Re-Taking the Math Assessment:

  • You must first have gone through learning modules.
  • You can re-take the placement up to 2 times (in addition to your original assessment).
  • You have 1 year from the date that you did your initial math placement assessment to take advantage of the re-assessment option.
