MATH PLACEMENT
TRANSFER STUDENTS:
There is not a need to complete math placement at this time.
FRESHMEN STUDENTS:
URI requires new freshmen students to complete the Math Placement Exam, regardless of intended major, through ALEKS to assess a student's prerequisite content knowledge. The results will support the academic advising staff to recommend courses placement.
ALEKS is a powerful artificial-intelligence based online assessment tool that zeros in on the strengths and weaknesses of a student's mathematical knowledge, reports its findings to the student, and provides the student with an online learning module (LM) that can be used to bring this knowledge up to an appropriate level for course placement or for review with the goal of being better prepared for their first math course at URI.
What is the cost of the URI Math Placement Exam through ALEKS?
The placement exam for freshmen students is covered through your Orientation fees.
To start the exam:
Click on the " Access the Placement System: I'm Ready" link below to start the placement exam.
After Completing the Initial Placement Assessment:
Learning Modules: Once you complete the initial placement tool, you will see a color-coded pie chart that displays your results. In the "pie", each slice corresponds to a particular content area (i.e. logarithms or exponents) and, the degree to which the slice is filled in with a darker color, shows the extent to which you have mastery of that content area.
If you wish to increase your skill level in a particular content area, and then retake the placement assessment, you can take advantage of the learning modules. Simply click on the pie slice and you will be brought into the learning modules.
