The Focus Area engages in extensive service to the public and private sectors and conducts internationally renowned and externally funded programs of research.

We present over 125 performances for the public featuring Theatre and Music and offer several exhibitions in our Fine Arts Center Galleries throughout each academic year.

Additionally, we house the
¨ Center for the Humanities,
¨ Cancer Prevention Research Consortium,
¨ John Hazen White Sr. Center for Ethics and Public Service,
¨ Psychological Consultation Center, and the
¨ RI Partnership for Research on Women and Gender.

Many of our faculty and students are engaged in collaborative outreach and research within the Liberal Arts and Sciences Core and in affiliation with the URI focus areas. We offer successful summer camps for youth in Music and in Computer Science, and co-sponsor the acclaimed Great Performances Series and the Kingston Chamber Music Festival.

Outreach Program Title:  Fine Arts Center Galleries
Website:  http://www.uri.edu/artgalleries/
Outreach Program Director Name:  Judith Tolnick
Phone:  (401) 874-2775  Fax:  (401) 874-2007
E-mail:  Jtolnick@uri.edu
Outreach Program Description: The ambitious exhibition program across 3 galleries is devoted to exploring and presenting national and international contemporary art in all media, with increasing emphasis on multi- & cross-cultural dialogue.
Outreach Program Impact Statement: An active contemporary art exhibition program is presented annually within each of the College of Arts & Sciences' Fine Arts Center Galleries public exhibition areas:  Main Gallery, Corridor Gallery, Photography Gallery.  Unique among university galleries in the northeast, all Fine Arts Center Galleries exhibitions are generated internally from a national palette of artists, rather than traveling to the university from organizing/sponsoring institutions elsewhere.  This policy makes gallery programming exceptionally responsive to interests of the immediate academic community.  With the appointment of J. Tolnick in 1991, the majority of exhibitions have been devoted to contemporary art in all media, with increasing emphasis on multi-and cross cultural dialogue.  Annual calendars seek a balance between nationally, internationally recognized and emerging artists, through one-person, two-person and thematic group exhibitions of various types.  A balance of gender is another criterion, which guides the formulation of contemporary exhibitions.  Tolnick has also developed and mounted 5 major historical exhibitions for URI:  "The Centennial Exhibition" marking the University's birth in 1892 (1992); "In Memoriam:  Daguerreotype Death Portraits from the Collection of Dr. Stanley B. Burns" (1996); "The Rhode Island State House Centennial Exhibition"  (1996 & traveling in 1997); "(Re) Presenting a Half-Century of the College of Arts and Sciences" (1998) and "The War in Vietnam-Afterimages"  (1999.)  In the Main and Photography Galleries, focus is in principle non-local.  The Corridor Gallery is dedicated instead of changing exhibitions of recent works by members of the URI Department of Art faculty; visiting artists; or those resident in Rhode Island and immediate adjacent areas.  Frequently it complements the content of Main Gallery exhibitions.  Posters and postcards announce all programs to a sizable national and media mailing list.  Exhibitions are announced and/or reviewed regularly by Art Now Gallery Guide (New York and New England editions); and in competitive, sought-after media outlets including Art New England; The Providence Journal; The Providence Phoenix; The Narragansett Times; The New York Times; and The South County Independent.  Since 1991, brochures, booklets or wall text accompany all exhibitions and complementary programming (gallery talks by visiting artists or the director and gallery tours) are an integral part of all offerings.  Success of visitor outreach is attested to by numbers of repeat visitors:  20,000 + people now visit the galleries throughout the University use gallery exhibitions for teaching purposes, especially Art, English, Journalism, Marketing, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology/Anthropology and Honors Colloquia.  Group visits by classes from URI's Providence campus, as well as from CCRI, RISD and Salve Regina are also frequent.  The Galleries are supported through competitive internal and external grants and through URI arts fees.
