Dr. Barber’s research encompasses Nineteenth-
and Twentieth-Century British Literature, Virginia Woolf, Modernist Literature
and Comparative Literature.
Dr.
Judith S. Mercer top
College of Nursing
Dr. Mercer’s research investigates the effects of Delayed Cord Clamping (DCC)
in Very Low Birth Weight (VLBW) infants (< 1500 grams birth weight) and
explores physiologic and developmental detrimental effects of Immediate Cord
Clamping (ICC). DCC allows for
more red blood cells to pass into the infant, thereby improving the neonatal
outcomes in VLBW infants.

The
focus of Ms. Gerzevitz’s outreach activities has been to expose graduate
students and others to cross-cultural health care.
Annually she takes a group of students to Honduras, where they live and
work among the villagers, conducting primary health care. This enables
students to learn about the culture, the health care system, the people and
themselves. Here in RI Ms. Gerzevitz is deeply involved with the Rhode Island
Free Clinic. She has sought to bring the resources of the University through
the Colleges of Nursing and Pharmacy, to meet the health care needs of the
immigrating and disenfranchised minority populations. She also has a small
inner city church-based clinic in South Providence that serves a small group
of uninsured, impoverished clients.

of Pharmacy
The Pharmacy Outreach Program is committed to responding to the
medication needs of the Rhode Island Community, resulting in improved quality
of life for all residents. This
is accomplished through its three distinctive components. The Medication for
the Needy Program assists low income Rhode Islanders and their physicians
in accessing the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers' Assistance Programs that
provide free or low cost medications. The Medication Information Hotline is a
toll-free resource for medication information; answering concerns regarding
medications, drug therapy and current health care issues. The Medication
Education Resource Center focuses on supplementing Rhode Islanders'
knowledge of their medications through educational programs, medication
counseling (Brown Bag Programs) and health screenings.

Mr.
Donath has contributed to graduate studies through his selfless activities on
the GSA, serving as President and office manager.
He was driven to improve the conditions under which graduate students
lived, studied and worked. He tried to foster an atmosphere of social
and
intellectual exchange among new scholars. His vision of exchange was
multidisciplinary, bringing together groups from different fields who
wouldn’t normally communicate with each other. Mr. Donath played an
influential role in organizing the new graduate student union, which has
helped students negotiate a contract with the University which provides better
pay and health insurance, making URI more competitive with other universities.
