Dr. Barber’s research encompasses
Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century British Literature, Virginia Woolf, Modernist Literature and Comparative Literature.  

Dr. Judith S. Mercer top
College of Nursing

Dr. Mercer’s research investigates the effects of Delayed Cord Clamping (DCC) in Very Low Birth Weight (VLBW) infants (< 1500 grams birth weight) and explores physiologic and developmental detrimental effects of Immediate Cord Clamping (ICC).  DCC allows for more red blood cells to pass into the infant, thereby improving the neonatal outcomes in VLBW infants.  

Dr. Katherine Scheil  top

Dr. Scheil is an asset in bringing her innovative research into the classroom.  It comes alive with attention to historicism while reaching her students.  She recently completed a book on Shakespeare in the eighteenth century.  Her current research project is a book on women and reading groups of Shakespeare in America.  

Dr. Yeqiao Wang top

Dr. Y.Q. Wang conducts research in natural resources management and mapping. He has been using satellite and airborne remote sensing data to study and model the dynamics of landscape.  His research demonstrates how human-induced land use and land cover change and impact ecosystems and how it can be effectively modeled. NASA, USAID, and USDA have funded his projects. His study includes selected areas in the United States, East Africa and China.  

OUTSTANDING OUTREACH 2003

Ms. Diane R. Gerzevitz top
College of Nursing

The focus of Ms. Gerzevitz’s outreach activities has been to expose graduate students and others to cross-cultural health care.  Annually she takes a group of students to Honduras, where they live and work among the villagers, conducting primary health care. This enables students to learn about the culture, the health care system, the people and themselves. Here in RI Ms. Gerzevitz is deeply involved with the Rhode Island Free Clinic. She has sought to bring the resources of the University through the Colleges of Nursing and Pharmacy, to meet the health care needs of the immigrating and disenfranchised minority populations. She also has a small inner city church-based clinic in South Providence that serves a small group of uninsured, impoverished clients.

Lisa Gould is executive director of the Rhode Island Natural History Survey (RINHS), an umbrella organization for the gathering of ecological data in Rhode Island. RINHS projects include: cataloguing the State's flora, fauna, and ecological communities; holding conferences and seminars on the State's biota and habitats; publishing original natural history monographs; coordinating information on invasive species; and providing inventory, monitoring, and stewardship services to Rhode Island's land conservation agencies.

Dr. Paquette has been instrumental in the planning, development, funding and implementation of several new undergraduate biotechnology programs in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology.  He has done this in consultation and collaboration with the rapidly emerging biopharmaceutical industry in Rhode Island, especially Amgen in West Greenwich and Dow Biopharmaceuticals in Smithfield.  He has also collaborated with Governor Carcieri's office, The Rhode Island Economic Policy Council, and The Rhode Island Human Resource Investment Council.  

Mr. Joseph M. Parillo top

Joe Parillo, Steinway Artist, recording artist, composer/arranger and producer, coordinates and directs various widespread community programs and concerts.  He conducts and directs the award-winning URI Big Band in diversified locales, runs the URI Jazz and World Music Festival annually, and coordinates the RI High School Jazz Competition.  Mr. Parillo is a well-known mentor to students of all ages as well as the community at large.   He is an active, encouraging, and distinguished professor while also maintaining a productive and fulfilling professional career as an artist.

The goals of the URI Cooperative Extension Food Safety Education Program are to reduce the risk of food borne illness and assist food businesses in maintaining their economic viability.  These goals are achieved through outreach educational programs and consultations targeting the food industry, school-age children, their caregivers and consumers.  The program has been in existence for 12 years, its activities have been developed and implemented in collaboration with nonprofit community agencies, RI State departments including DEM, Division of Agriculture, Education and Health, Division of Food Protection, school districts, industry groups and the industry.  

Pharmacy Outreach Program top
College of Pharmacy
The Pharmacy Outreach Program is committed to responding to the medication needs of the Rhode Island Community, resulting in improved quality of life for all residents.  This is accomplished through its three distinctive components. The Medication for the Needy Program assists low income Rhode Islanders and their physicians in accessing the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers' Assistance Programs that provide free or low cost medications. The Medication Information Hotline is a toll-free resource for medication information; answering concerns regarding medications, drug therapy and current health care issues. The Medication Education Resource Center focuses on supplementing Rhode Islanders' knowledge of their medications through educational programs, medication counseling (Brown Bag Programs) and health screenings.

Dr. Laura L. Beauvais top

Dr. Beauvais has worked closely with both masters and doctoral students across multiple colleges, advising them on internships and independent studies, serving on thesis committees, as well as collaborating with them in over 20 research papers over the past 10 years.  In addition, she was the first Ph.D. Director in the College of Business Administration from 1992-1995, and directed the full time MBA Program from 1996-1999.  She also has served on the Graduate Council, on the Graduate Fellowship Committee for several years, and currently serves as Chair of the Graduate Affairs and Research Committee in the College of Business Administration.

Professor Vincent C. Rose, Associate Dean of the Graduate School for more than 20 years, having been closely associated with the development of graduate education at URI and carries much of the University's institutional memory in this area.  Professor Rose continues to be active in matters dealing with graduate education and is an invaluable University resource.

William Rosen has been interested in Graduate Education for an extensive period of time. He has served on the URI Graduate Council several times, and has served as Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Chemistry for the past ten years.  He has been a research advisor for more than twenty students over the past thirty years. He has taught numerous graduate level courses in a variety of subject areas related to chemistry and he has pushed the URI community to accept the idea that Graduate Education is the hallmark and the foundation for defining the essence and unique qualities of a Research University.

Mr. Holger Donath top
College of Business Administration
Mr. Donath has contributed to graduate studies through his selfless activities on the GSA, serving as President and office manager.  He was driven to improve the conditions under which graduate students lived, studied and worked. He tried to foster an atmosphere of social
and intellectual exchange among new scholars. His vision of exchange was multidisciplinary, bringing together groups from different fields who wouldn’t normally communicate with each other. Mr. Donath played an influential role in organizing the new graduate student union, which has helped students negotiate a contract with the University which provides better pay and health insurance, making URI more competitive with other universities.
