TOSS
is a 79-page, spiral-bound booklet/report
prepared by nineteen R.I. high school
students who completed the RIGEC/URI Urban
Field Center (UFC) "Health
Professions in Geriatrics Research
Project"
during the summer of 2000. The goal of the
project was to encourage interest in
health professions in geriatrics and
gerontology among high school students,
especially students from minority or
underserved
communities.
The
booklet is divided into the following
sections:
- Forward - an introduction to the project
prepared by UFC Project Director
Kathleen A. Dodge
- Daily
Program Agenda - a project
curriculum developed by the project
faculty and staff
- Student
Reports:
Interviews - summaries of
students' interviews with health
professionals
Careers - students' reports on
educational requirements and career
opportunities in the health
professions
Ageism - reports on the
rationale and results of the students'
survey of senior citizens; the survey
instrument; and narratives on ageism
and anti-discrimination advocacy
Medical Issues - summary reports
of students' research on medical issues
effecting the elderly
This
engaging booklet is filled with color
photographs of the students and many of
the senior citizens and health
professionals they met during the course
of the project, all interwoven with the
students' own personal thoughts and
feelings about what they
learned.
Teens
Against Senior Stereotypes (TAGS) is a
72-page follow up to the pioneering TOSS
project. This full color, spiral bound
booklet was written, designed and prepared
by seven high school students who enrolled
in the Health Professions in Geriatric
Research Project in the summer of
2001.
