Workshop II: Legal and Ethical Issues in Geriatric Care

Objectives: Upon
completion of this workshop, participants
will be able to:
- Compare patient, family (or surrogate), and provider interpretations of such values as autonomy and quality of life
- Demonstrate how the basic concepts and methods of advance directives and living wills can be used in decision-making in clinical care
- Critically analyze the value systems and codes of professional ethics among the health professions
- Explain how clinical resources on cultural competency and health literacy can be utilized in decision-making in clinical practice
- Differentiate between the legal mechanisms of durable power of attorney for health care and guardianship, including their implications for informed consent and procedural requirements
- Analyze legal and ethical issues in actual clinical cases as part of an interdisciplinary team
