Health Literacy and Cultural Competence: Key Information & Strategies for Providers: Workshop V

Objectives: Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Define cultural competence and its impact on patient care and outcomes
  2. Discuss legal implications associated with health literacy and cultural competence
  3. Describe health disparities, CLAS standards, RI regulations regarding language access, and resources for health professionals on language access, low health literacy (LHL), and cultural competence
  4. Explain potential cultural and religious influences on the use of and adherence to medications for common conditions
  5. Define health literacy
  6. Explain the scope, relevance, and impact of LHL on patient care and health outcomes, particularly for older adults
  7. Discuss strategies to improve communication and comprehension between patients and providers
  8. Discuss the impact of age-related changes on communication and comprehension
  9. Discuss the possible impact/influences of LHL, culture, language, and age-related changes on patient interaction, management, and outcomes
