Workshop II: Legal and Ethical Issues in Geriatric Care

Objectives: Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Compare patient, family (or surrogate), and provider interpretations of such values as autonomy and quality of life
  2. Demonstrate how the basic concepts and methods of advance directives and living wills can be used in decision-making in clinical care
  3. Critically analyze the value systems and codes of professional ethics among the health professions
  4. Explain how clinical resources on cultural competency and health literacy can be utilized in decision-making in clinical practice
  5. Differentiate between the legal mechanisms of durable power of attorney for health care and guardianship, including their implications for informed consent and procedural requirements
  6. Analyze legal and ethical issues in actual clinical cases as part of an interdisciplinary team
