Health Literacy and Cultural Competence: Key Information & Strategies for Providers: Workshop V

Objectives: Upon
completion of this workshop, participants
will be able to:
- Define cultural competence and its impact on patient care and outcomes
- Discuss legal implications associated with health literacy and cultural competence
- Describe health disparities, CLAS standards, RI regulations regarding language access, and resources for health professionals on language access, low health literacy (LHL), and cultural competence
- Explain potential cultural and religious influences on the use of and adherence to medications for common conditions
- Define health literacy
- Explain the scope, relevance, and impact of LHL on patient care and health outcomes, particularly for older adults
- Discuss strategies to improve communication and comprehension between patients and providers
- Discuss the impact of age-related changes on communication and comprehension
- Discuss the possible impact/influences of LHL, culture, language, and age-related changes on patient interaction, management, and outcomes
