Research and Extension

For a number of years, I have been studying the physiology and anatomy of adventitious root initiation. I started working with etiolation as a stock plant treatment in the 1980's, and have been working with dose-response curves for five years. I am always looking for new materials and methods to simplify woody plant culture. Current projects in propagation include subirrigation (graduate student JIM OWEN, JR.), shading and stooling.

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING NEW TO TRY?
I set up a shade enclosure over a 50 year-old hedge of difficult-to-root paperbark maple. Cuttings taken from under 60-80% shade were indistiguishable from full sun cuttings, except that they rooted between 80 and 95% (control 40%)!

Current research efforts besides propagation include Integrated Pest Management of Deer in nurseries and landscapes (recent graduate student Nicole Lemieux), using contructed wetland biofilters to grow ornamental plants for sale as waste water is purified (graduate student Tom Holt), and the most outrageous yet (though it might make us rich) - direct seeding of Zostera marina (seagrass) seed in marine sediments.

I work extensively with the Rhode Island nursery industry, which is active and committed to research. I serve on the boards of the Rhode Island Nursery and Landscape Association, and the International Plant Propagator's Society - Eastern Region.
