Course objectives:
LSC537 serves as an introduction to the field of health sciences librarianship. We aim to help class members learn to use the literature, understand the vocabulary, practice information retrieval, explore computer applications, develop useful book and journal collections, investigate new reference tools, identify key issues affecting our profession, and to understand the environments of health sciences librarianship and the larger institutions that the library supports. We learn these tools in order to effectively assist our patrons, health services professsionals and consumers, in accessing the health information they require, in order that our physicians and health care professionals more effectively treat our patients. We assist them in their practice of the highest standards of evidence-based medicine. (The more you know, the better you heal.) Our patrons will come from diverse backgrounds, clinicians, researchers, educators, nurses, administrators, allied health professionals, other librarians, students and interns, healthcare consumers, patients and families.
