CHAPTER I: The small band of ciliate hunters had stopped to rest
beside the murky waters of the Great Swamp. Their leader, a professor at
a nearby well-known educational institution, had called a halt but did
not allow them to rest a moment. "Let's take the samples right away," she
exclaimed.

it into the water. "I wonder what is lurking under that White Cedar root!"
one of the students exclaimed. "Very likely a new species!"
the professor offered, as she zipped the bag. "Let's get back to
the lab and take a look!" Back in the lab the crew put a drop from
the baggie under the videomicroscope. "WOW!" said one student.
