The City Today

While the city at its peak was a very busy and crowded place, traveling there today presents a very different picture. Other than the tourists and numerous street vendors, the ancient city is very desolate. Interestingly enough, much of the city that was destroyed when the culture left has been rebuilt by historians in order to present a picture of how life may have been. The difference between the old parts and rebuilt sections is very obvious. As shown in the picture below, the floor and bottom part of the walls are constructed of a more uniform stone. However, the upper section of the walls and the four mini-pillars are constructed of many stones held together with some sort of cement with even smaller stones in between. This very blatant different could perhaps be to make it clear what is original and what was built to show what the city looked like before being destroyed.
