Welcome to the Second Homepage
The Actros is the new long-haul truck from Mercedes-Benz, a German-based manufacturer of passenger and industrial-use vehicles with factories all over the globe. The Actros is a heavy goods vehicle that maximises comfort and driver safety by incorporating the latest in modern technology and is available in 18, 26, 38, 40, 41 and 44t weights.
LOW FUEL CONSUMPTION
The truck has a design working life of a million kilometres with service required at 100,000km intervals. Powered by a choice of V6 or V8 Series engines the truck can produce between 230kW/313 and 420kW/571hp and maximum torque is 1,530 to 2,700Nm which is produced at a low rev rate of 1,080rpm (also the point of lowest fuel consumption). This enables the Actros to achieve 0-60km/h in 33.4s.
This is possible because the Telligent Injection system, which operates at a maximum pressure of 1800 bar and four valves per cylinder, ensures better efficiency and optimum combustion, lowering fuel consumption as a consequence. The 1800-bar injection pressure system injects fuel through an eight-hole injection nozzle into the cylinder as a fine, fan-shaped spray. The engine is also fitted with an intercooler and turbo-charger that produce a high power:low engine weight ratio.
CHASSIS LADDER FRAME
The Actros chassis ladder frame is fabricated from 6.7, 8 and 9.5mm E500™ riveted and bolted high-tensile steel. Actros is available in both rigid and tractor chassis forms. The tractor comes as a 4 x 2 with full air drive axle suspension, saving 70kg over conventional steel designs. The 6 x 2 has an air-suspended lifting mid axle that minimises its total weight, while aluminium fuel tanks fitted as standard and aluminium air tanks (optional) also help reduce kerb weight.
ACTROS TRACTOR
The Actros tractor is available with either air suspension, which provides greater stability against rolling movement, or parabolic leaf springs anchored in maintenance-free rubber molecular bearings, which ensure safe, predictable handling. Telligent level control also makes it possible to raise and lower the frame – a time-saving device when changing trailers.
Actros uses full synchromesh, 16-speed transmission, which transfers engine output to the road faster, reducing power loss. The Telligent gearshift or the optional Telligent Autotrans system also reduces wear and tear.
TELLIGENT SYSTEM
The truck's Telligent braking system reduces stopping distances by up to 30% – almost 20m (the combined length of a truck and trailer) earlier than trucks with conventional braking systems. Fade-resistant, ventilated, compressed-air disc brakes are fitted at the front and rear. Discs are operated by permanent 10-bar pressure and use 'braking-by-wire' Telligent technology with ASR anti-skid traction control and ABS fitted as standard.
Mercedes is particularly proud of this innovative braking system, which works as the brain of the truck. Kept informed by a four-wire CAN bus data system, relevant data, such as engine speed, engine load and engine temperature (plus factors like outside air pressure and temperature), is inputted. The system then calculates in milliseconds the ideal injection period and injection timing for each cylinder, ensuring maximum fuel efficiency under all conditions at all times. This means more power, less fuel and up to 50% lower emissions.
Telligent level adjustment is linked to the air suspension. It allows it to be raised and lowered remotely from the cab.
Telligent diagnostics constantly monitor data from the engine, brake system, transmission etc., calculates for each component the number of miles left before maintenance is required and records any faults occurring – which the driver can call up as vehicle data.
Telligent gearshift relieves the driver, is easy on the transmission and, in the case of Autotrans, allows the driver to keep both hands on the wheel at all times.
