Cystic Fibrosis and Current Drug Therapy Issues

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this knowledge-based program participants will be:

  1. Describe cystic fibrosis and its cumulative therapies for lung disease
  2. List known cystic fibrosis pathogens and current antimicrobials guidelines
  3. Determine activity and effectiveness of novel treatment regimens, including NSAIDs, leukotriene antagonists, and macrolides
  4. Summarize literature regarding efficacy and cost analysis of hypertonic saline and rhDNase treatments

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this knowledge-based program, participants will be able to:

  1. Define the demographic characteristics of elderly patients today
  2. Describe the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes that are associated with the geriatric population
  3. Identify predictors of adverse drug reactions in geriatric patients
  4. Identify and recognize potential communication barriers to the geriatric patient and caregiver


 

The Beers Criteria: Clinical Applications and Considerations for the Geriatric Patient

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this knowledge-based program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Recommend appropriate alternatives for medications on the Beers List
  2. Identify medications that are associated with an increase in confusion, dizziness, and falls in the geriatric patient
  3. Identify pertinent monitoring parameters for patients taking medications on the Beers List
  4. Formulate an appropriate treatment plan to minimize drug adverse drug reactions in the geriatric patient


 

Issues Facing the Geriatric Patient: Role of the Community Pharmacist

  1. Define common medication-related problems for community-dwelling geriatric patients;
  2. Describe common reasons for medication non-adherence by geriatric patients;
  3. Analyze the risk of drug-drug interactions between prescription and over-the-counter medications in this patient population; and
  4. Formulate a plan to improve medication safety and adherence for community-dwelling geriatric patients

  4. Explain practice issues driving lawsuits against pharmacists.

The registration fee includes all program materials, and a light dinner. Registration fee, subject to a $10 processing charge, will be refunded provided written notification is received ten days prior to the mini course session.
