Research Interests:
Dr. Hume’s scholarship is in primary care, pharmacoepidemiology, complementary medicine and geriatrics. Along with several colleagues, she recently received grant funding from the National Library of Medicine for a project on Internet health education of consumers. She has received national research awards and is the author of over 120 publications including "Drugs and the Elderly" in Clinical Aspects of Aging. Since 2001, she has authored the “Botanical Medicines” chapter in the APhA Handbook of Nonprescription Drug Products. Dr. Hume serves as an NIH grant reviewer for the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, as well as for major professional organizations. Dr. Hume has served as a consultant on HCFA contracts regarding the use of drugs as quality indicators in nursing home residents. She is a reviewer for many pharmacy and primary care medical journals. Dr. Hume is on the Editorial Board of the Annals of Pharmacotherapy and was selected to serve on the Editorial Board of the Pharmacotherapy Self-Assessment Program (PSAP) in 2005.

Dr. Hume has diverse teaching interests in preventive cardiology, complementary medicine and geriatrics, especially from an interdisciplinary approach. She has been a faculty member in the Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center funded by the U.S. Bureau of Health Professions since 1996. Dr. Hume was elected to Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society for Teaching Excellence in 1998. In 2001, she received a teaching excellence award from the Brown University School of Medicine. In 2005, Dr. Hume was selected to develop the pharmacotherapy module for the National Association of Geriatric Education Centers.

Dr. Hume has served on the Rhode Island Drug Utilization Board, the Rhode Island Institute for Pharmaceutical Care, and on a Rhode Island House of Representatives commission on naturopaths. In 2003, she was elected to the Phi Lambda Sigma leadership society. Dr. Hume is active in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) and is a past Chair of Ambulatory Care Practice and Research Network of ACCP. In 1999, she was elected a Fellow of ACCP. Dr. Hume is also active in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
