Objectives

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes as to signs, symptoms and treatment.
  • Identify risk factors and components of patient assessment.
  • Discuss the diagnosis, complications and impact of diabetes.
  • Describe the most recent nutrition recommendations from the American Diabetes Association for Type I and Type 2 diabetes.
  • Describe how to balance meal plan activity and blood glucose and the procedure of carbohydrate counting.
  • Distinguish between the different types and actions of pharmaceutical interventions.
  • Describe the use of blood glucose test results to make adjustments in management.
  • State the necessary instructions for self foot care and describe self care measures for sick days.
  • Discuss the determinants of diabetes-related behavior and state the benefits of exercise therapy.
  • Differentiate features and benefits of various blood glucose monitoring devices.
  • Describe the steps that need to be taken to receive reimbursement as a diabetes educator.
  • Identify components necessary for recognition of diabetes education centers by the ADA and the RI Department of Health.
  • Demonstrate the use of a blood glucose monitor.

Participants in the 1998 program had the highest pass rate as a group for the RI DOH CDOE Certification Exam.

Continuing Education Credit

The program will provide the participant with 30 contact hours (3.0 CEUs) of continuing education credit. The University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy is approved by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education as a provider of continuing pharmaceutical education. Attendance, proper use of a blood glucose monitor, and completion of evaluation forms and of self assessment tools at the conclusion of the program is required for issuance of certificate.
