“Motivational Interviewing: Assessing and Assisting Patients for Health Behavior Change”

Behavior is the result of the interaction between what we believe and how we feel. In order to change behavior, it is necessary to change the underlying beliefs and feelings related to that behavior. Pharmacists can have a positive or negative influence on patient behaviors and adherence.

This program explores the pharmacists beliefs and barriers that may impair quality healthcare communication delivery; and will introduce techniques and skills to assist the pharmacist in helping patients make healthy behavior or lifestyle changes.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the 2-day application and knowledge-based program, participants will be able to:

Day 1

  1. Discuss HIV prevention and hepatitis immunization strategies implemented in community pharmacies nationally and globally;
  2. Demonstrate experience with and knowledge of nonstructural barriers to HIV prevention and hepatitis immunization techniques;
  3. Express desirability to implement clinically and financially sustainable public health efforts like HIV testing at community pharmacies;
  4. Apply community pharmacy practice-specific priorities for sustainable public health efforts like HIV testing and Hepatitis immunization;
  5. Describe the history of antibiotic use and the effects on antibacterial drug resistance;
  6. Discuss how antimicrobial stewardship decreases resistance and improves patient outcomes;
  7. Explain antimicrobial stewardship, national and statewide initiatives and necessary components for a successful outcome;
  8. Describe the role of the Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline;
  9. Discuss relevant federal statutory and regulatory definitions;
  10. Restate a risk management check list for practice.

Day 2

  1. Discuss current thought regarding appropriate management of opioids for pain management;
  2. Discuss problem of opioid use, misuse, addiction and dependence;
  3. List three symptoms of the stress response;
  4. Analyze three relaxation strategies to cope with stressors;
  5. Describe the overall purpose and goals of REMS programs;
  6. List commonly prescribed drugs that require dispensing with a medication guide;
  7. Discuss recent developments in REMS programs, particularly for opioid agonists;
  8. Define the role of the pharmacist in REMS programs;
  9. Discuss the current trends and statistics on prescription drug abuse in the United States;
  10. Discuss the most commonly abused prescription drugs and their effects;
  11. Describe the rise in abuse of non-controlled drugs;
  12. Explain simple strategies that can be implemented to help minimize the potential for prescription drug abuse;
  13. Discuss the RI Prescription Monitoring Program and its use in pharmacy practice;
  14. Describe recent changes to RI Pharmacy Regulations;
  15. Discuss Drug Scheduling Updates and Federal Proposals;
  16. Review and achieve understanding of the RI Controlled Substances Act with respect to Prescriptions (sec 3.18).

Continuing Education Credits

Participants will receive up to 0.75 CEUs (7.5 contact hours) for each day of attendance up to a total of 1.5 CEUs (15 contact hours.)  *One contact hour of law credit will be awarded each day to Thursday and Friday attendees. One Contact Hour of immunization credit will be awarded to Thursday attendees. The University Of Rhode Island College Of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.  Attendance and completion of online program evaluations and self-assessment tools at the conclusion of the program are required to print a statement of credit. This program includes application and knowledge-based learning activities.

FREE daytime parking at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Spa and Conference Center.

Callers can refer to the “URI College of Pharmacy Seminar by the Sea” to obtain the conference room rate of $141 plus tax, single or double occupancy. The resort fee is waived.  This benefit includes high speed wireless internet access in guest rooms, overnight self-parking, Hyatt shuttle van transportation to and from downtown Newport, two bottled waters per guest room per night, 24-hour access to the fitness center and indoor pool, unlimited local phone calls and on-property resort activities.

The deadline for room reservations at this special rate is February 24, 2013 or until the room block is full.  Reservations received after the deadline will be based on availability at the hotel’s prevailing rates.
