In 1995, the URI
College of Pharmacy committed to the development of an area of
excellence in the economic and epidemiology fields of pharmacy practice
and research, with an emphasis on managed care pharmacy. This effort,
the program in pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics, now includes
faculty, adjunctive faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and
consultants.
Program faculty have
extensive prior experience in academic research and healthcare
consulting. Several faculty have held executive management positions in
the pharmacy benefit management (PBM), contract research and state
agencies. Collaborative relationships were created with a variety of
organizations in the private sector for the purpose of research,
teaching and service. These ties with the private sector led to faculty
engagement in practical, applied healthcare projects that benefit the
University as well as state agencies, managed care and pharmacy benefit
management partners.
In 2000, the Healthcare
Utilization Management Center (HUMC) was formed to provide Doctor of
Pharmacy and graduate students with experience in managing the
pharmaceutical component of the healthcare system by resolving current
managed care issues with clients.
