The new University of Rhode Island
College of Pharmacy building project has moved along swiftly
over the past few months. The design process is on schedule and,
so far, on budget. We have approved the schematic design for the
building (the floor plans) and are now immersed in the Design
Development stage of the project. During this stage we will be
working through the details of the design and preparing plans
that are one step away from the final construction set.
The first set of design development
consultation meetings took place last Thursday; these meetings
addressed questions related to research
and teaching spaces. Participants
in the meetings were enthusiastic and provided the architects
with some great input.

Members of the New URI College of
Pharmacy Building design team met with representatives from the
College and the University to discuss the LEED agenda for the
new building. This meeting was a first step to addressing our
commitment to making this new building a sustainable facility
which meets or exceeds the standards established by the State or
Rhode Island. The meeting discussed strategies for reducing
energy and water consumption and maximizing the use of green
materials for construction. A number of ideas were shared by
consultants involved in the project; these will be explored
further over the next few weeks and month. The team is excited
about the opportunity to create a building that is not only
green but economical with the steps taken to reduce energy
consumption also reducing the ongoing running costs of the
building. For further
information about the LEED framework which we are using to guide
this process visit:

More generally the design team is
working on the massing of the building (size and shape), its
layering (what program items are located on each floor) and how
it interacts with the adjacent buildings. This stage of the
project will flow into the development of detailed floor plans

The New College Pharmacy Building
project achieved a major milestone with approval being given for
its budget, site and program. Approval
of these items allows the project to progress into the schematic
design phase where documents are generated that show the general
massing of the building, the adjacencies of rooms/spaces and
approximate layouts of each room/space. The 130,000sqft building
will be located just to the north of Woodward and Tyler Hall and
will house the following:
- A Pharmacy Teaching Suite:
Advanced Patient Simulation Center, Professional Practice
Lab, Two Specialized Teaching Labs
- General classrooms including
a 136 seat lecture hall with 3D projection technology
- An Advanced Instrumentation
Suite
- A NMR facility
- A Pharmaceutics Research and
Teaching Suite
- Eight person research
modules
- An Applied Pharmaceutical
Care Suite
- Student areas including a
study room and student organizations office
- Administrative space and
faculty offices

The full Building Committee met for
the first time. The committee was briefed by President
Carothers, Dean Letendre and Vice President Weygand on the
importance of this project to the College and the University and
on how it fits into the wider development plans for the northern
part of the URI Kingston Campus.
The committee was then briefed on
the various stages of the project and engaged in a discussion on
some basic design principles for the building.
The committee's initial task will be
to undertake a programmatic review where the space needs that we
identified in 2003 will be re-evaluated and updated.
