Detailed Course DescriptionBioinformatics I is a cross-disciplinary course, taken by biologists, computer scientists, and statisticians with an interest in the emerging technologies, tools and software necessary for understanding and creating meaning from the tremendous amounts of data now available describing biological systems. Activities/Class format This course provides overview of pharmacy practice of gastrointestinal and endocrine patients, including disease states, pharmacokinetics/dynamics, and unique application of knowledge, and skills not discussed in required courses. Students taking this course will benefit in professional skills and knowledge for taking care of patients with gastrointestinal conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and diabetes, thyroid, women’s health issues in both community and hospital practice settings. Additional focus of course is to sharpen skills in humanistic aspects of human disease. Didactic teaching/small group discussions/debates Each student will have a choice of the following “project”: 1. Video Day, 2. Debate or 3. Community Service-Journal Project: Students can choose to create a 10-15 minute video, be part of an in-class debate or complete a community service with journaling project. You will be asked to email Dr. Cohen to inform her of your choice of project. You will need to contact her with the paper or debate topic or community service project. This activity is worth 20% of your final grade.
