PHP 520 Advanced Gastrointestinal & Endocrine Disorders

(Lec. 3) Pre: third year Doctor of Pharmacy professional student or permission of instructor. Not for graduate credit

Detailed Course Description

Bioinformatics I is a cross-disciplinary course, taken by biologists, computer scientists, and statisticians with an interest in the emerging technologies, tools and software necessary for understanding and creating meaning from the tremendous amounts of data now available describing biological systems. 

Activities/Class format
Gastrointestinal and endocrine diseases constitute a considerable burden on today’s society.  Pharmacists are responsible for a large amount of knowledge regarding medications, disease knowledge, evaluation, and monitoring.  To meet these clinical needs, pharmacy clinicians need a broad understanding of gastrointestinal and endocrine conditions and the treatments that will treat these patient populations. 

This course provides overview of pharmacy practice of gastrointestinal and endocrine patients, including disease states, pharmacokinetics/dynamics, and unique application of knowledge, and skills not discussed in required courses.  Students taking this course will benefit in professional skills and knowledge for taking care of patients with gastrointestinal conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and diabetes, thyroid, women’s health issues in both community and hospital practice settings.  Additional focus of course is to sharpen skills in humanistic aspects of human disease.   

Didactic teaching/small group discussions/debates
The class is structured to have some didactic teaching, small group discussions, journal club discussions, group projects, and community service projects.   

Each student will have a choice of the following “project”: 

1.  Video Day, 2. Debate or 3. Community Service-Journal Project:

Students can choose to create a 10-15 minute video, be part of an in-class debate or complete a community service with journaling project.  You will be asked to email Dr. Cohen to inform her of your choice of project.  You will need to contact her with the paper or debate topic or community service project.  This activity is worth 20% of your final grade.

  1. Expand knowledge obtained during PHP 414, Pharmacotherapy of Gastrointestinal and Endocrine Disorders
  2. Critically evaluate primary literature related to gastrointestinal and endocrine topics                                               
  3. Develop the ability to apply primary literature and evidence based medicine to cases and discussions                                                           
  4. Develop therapeutic interventions for gastrointestinal or endocrine conditions                                                                                                          
  5. Utilize primary literature to debate controversial topics related gastrointestinal or endocrine treatments
