Catalog Description   An introduction to epidemiology, the study of health and disease in populations.  Epidemiologic methods and research design for conducting and interpreting health research. 
Estimated Enrollment   12 (Preference will be given to P3 students or completion of STA307).

 

Detailed Course Description

The specific objectives for this course are:

  1. To provide students with an understanding of the basic principles and methodology of epidemiology.
  2. To familiarize students with the process of public health research (i.e. hypothesis generation, literature review, study design, evaluation, etc.)
  3. To introduce students to common epidemiological study designs and provide a basic understanding of the strengths, weaknesses and common applications for each of these study designs.
  4. To familiarize students with sources of bias that may influence the validity of epidemiological research.
  5. To discuss the application of epidemiological research to areas of public health, health services research, outcomes research and related areas.  

Activities/Class format
This class utilizes a combination of lecture and discussion in a small seminar format.  Students are expected to read original studies and critique them in class.  The class meets once per week.   During the first 1-2 hours, new material is presented, followed by discussion of problem sets and readings.
